Mother Nature awarded Ukraine with unique environment. That is why question of environmental protection in Ukraine is not a secondary. Nature of Ukraine is variety of flora and fauna, impressive rivers, picturesque lakes, fascinating mountains and abundance of natural resources.
Nature of Ukraine mostly consists of flat, fertile plains, which are called steppes and plateaus with mixed forests.
Diverse Ukrainian landscapes provides wonderful habitats for flora and fauna species. Environmental protection in Ukraine is one of the most important questions that we have for today. For protection and development of different flora and fauna species Ukraine has 11 National Nature Parks, 16 National Preserves, 4 Biosphere Preserves, and a lot of smaller areas. All these reservoirs aimed at preserving its natural splendors. Some of the most important Parks and Preserves include Askania-Nova (located in Kherson region); Shatskiy National Preserve Area (which is located in Volyn region), Sofiyivsky Park (which is in Cherkasy), Trostianetsky Hydropark (which is situated in Chernihiv region).
As we all know, nature requires our protection. There is a special office in Ukraine, which aim is to protect nature in Ukraine and solve Ukraine environmental issues. This office is called Ministry of ecology and natural resources of Ukraine.
Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine is a central executive authority activity of which is governed and coordinated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Ministry of Ecology and Natural resources operates in the field of:
Ministry of Ecology and Natural resources in Ukraine ensures legal and regulatory governing of the water management and land reclamation. The other one task is to regulate geological study and efficient usage of mineral resources. Performance of state supervision on the fulfillment of the requirements of the environment legislation also requires attention of Ukrainian Ministry of Ecology and Natural resources.
Despite the fact that Ukraine has a specialized office for environmental protection, ecological situation in Ukraine is almost critical. In Ukraine, as well as in whole the world, the protection of nature has become one of the most burning problems of the 21st century. The earth provides us with all essential resources for living. The Earth created ideal environment for human activity, industrial and agricultural production. In response to this people constantly pollute the environment and make the life dangerous.
Ukraine is one of the most urbanized countries in Europe, up to 70% of all Ukrainian population live in cities. That is why the question of environmental protection in Ukraine requires additional attention of people, different organizations and government.
We can point out six the most important ecological problems in Ukraine that affect environment of the country.
According to researches water standards in Ukraine dated from 1980th and they are still in use. The problem is that during the past 30 years appeared dozens of new elements that affect and pollute the water we use. These elements have not been discovered yet, that is why no changes have been performed in order to improve our water standards. For today, clear water can be found out of the city in some wells. Ukrainian houses receive water from Dnepr and Dniester (the main Ukrainian rivers). However, the level of water cleaning is far for perfect and requires an implementation of new technologies. Today among 120 countries Ukraine ranks 105 for the level of water pollution.
According to ecologists, the problem of reduction of life-expectancy is not a demographical, but ecological problem. The mean reason for this tendency is polluted environment of Ukraine, polluted air and water. All these factors influence an average life-expectancy level. For your reference, an average life-expectancy in Poland, our neighbor country, equals 75 years, while in Ukraine this rate is 65 years.
Air pollution is the global environmental problem. Ukraine is no exception. Ukraine is considered to be one of the most polluted country because of level of air pollution. In contrast to the other European countries Ukrainian government does not pay so much attention to environmental protection and air pollutant level. The most polluted regions are places near motor-roads, plants, factories, city dumps.
According to the recent ecological research a dramatic reduction of animal and vegetal life is observed. A lot of flora and fauna species have been listed in to the Red Book or have disappeared from the territory of Ukraine at all. This state of things shows negative trend in environmental protection in Ukraine. A demonstrative example of reduction of flora and fauna species is reduction of bison population in the territory of the country. In 1991 bison population in Ukraine equaled 720 representatives, while today bison population in the country is 200 representatives only.
The other one environmental problem in Ukraine is expansion in the number of run-off and household wastes. The main reason for such a dramatic expansion is the fact that rubbish in our country is not utilized, but collected and burned. Level of run-off and household wastes in Ukraine increases year by year. In contrast to the other European countries where wastes disposal is a regular practice, in Ukraine utilized only 10% of all household wastes.
Another one environmental problem in Ukraine is Chernobyl nuclear explosion. Unfortunately, effects of this Ukrainian nuclear disaster cannot be removed. Only time can change and improve ecological situation in the territory where Chernobyl nuclear explosion has happened.
The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat. Chernobyl nuclear explosion is considered to be the worst nuclear power plant accident in history in terms of cost and casualties.
The accident caused the largest uncontrolled radioactive release into the environment. A large quantities of radioactive substances were released into the air for about 10 days. This caused serious social and economic disruption for large populations in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.
Chernobyl nuclear explosion affected all nearby territories for many years, especially Ukraine, Russia, Belorussia. If you are interested in information related to Chernobyl nuclear explosion you can check Wikipedia website.
